
It’s was an amazing scene of over 60 live beautiful dolphines swimming to the shore at the Brewire beach at Nzima in the Western Region of Ghana.
Hundreds of locals and fisherfolks trooped to catch a glimpse of the dolphins at about 2pm Sunday afternoon.
To the Fishermen, this was a direct blessing from god, adding that the most high has answered their prayer for bumper harvest. They forcefully dragged the dolphines on rocks and started sales negotiation with buyers. One could see the dolphines bleed with thick blood ozing from their beaks, blow holes, eyes, dorsal fins, flippers and flukes.
This ugly scene moved Nana Frimpomaa, the chair and leader of the Convention People’s Party who at the time was in a convoy to meet the Chief of Brewire on a scheduled tour of abundoned projects and factories initiated by Dr Kwame
Nkrumah in the Western Region. Nana Frimpomaa with her executives present at the time and quickly initiated a campaign to rescue the dolphines and save them from human consuption.
She related that, these dolphins are recreational fishes of tourist interest and must be rescued when they go astray.Nana added that, known for their playful behavior, dolphins are highly intelligent. They are as smart as apes, and the evolution of their larger brains is surprisingly similar to humans. In fact, they are said to be the second-most intelligent mammals after humans. Dolphins can recognize themselves in a mirror, and call each other unique names.’If there is a way to keep these dolphins safe for tourism purposes, I am ready to invest in them’.She called on the chief and elders of Bewire to support her call to ‘Save The Dolphines Now’ project. The Chief together with the District Police Commander DSP Daniel Safo who heeded to her calls for stop every body in the town who intended to trade the dolphines for human consuption.
It took Nana Frimpomaa and her team 9 hours of tough negotiation and education to get the people to comprehend the need to join the rescue efforts. Finally the chair and leader decided to pay in cash all the fisherfolks of Brewire who will return the dolphins to her. The Leader payed 3000 dollars to rescue 40 dolphines who had already been sold to marketers nearby in truckloads and tricycles.
Meanwhile investigative journalist and media team to the CPP leader uncovered several dolphines already slaughtered for the market. The said culprits had concealed the butchered dolphines under several large black sheets.
The police team cordened off the area and seized all butchery tools and pans. Arrangements were made to burry the carcasses. Nana Fripomaa finally got 40 dolphines rescued and returned a temporal location in the sea at 21 hours GMT.
