‘I Will Keep Defending Ada Songor People from McDan’– CPP Running Mate Lawyer Wayoe

ADA, GREATER ACCRA – In a resounding message of solidarity with the people of Ada, Lawyer Wayoe Ghanamannti, the presidential running mate for the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), has vowed to continue defending the Ada Songor community from the unlawful land grab by ElectroChem Ghana, a subsidiary of the McDan Group.

The CPP stalwart, in a passionate speech over the weekend during his campaign tour in Ada and Sege constituencies, lashed out at the illegal seizure of more than 41,000 acres of land and the entire Songhor Lagoon by ElectroChem. The lagoon, which has served as the backbone of the Ada community’s salt mining industry for generations, has been exploited by powerful individuals and state officials, leaving the local people in a state of distress and economic despair.

“ElectroChem, in collusion with the powers that be, has stolen what rightfully belongs to the people of Ada. This is a violation of their rights, their livelihoods, and their heritage,” Lawyer Ghanamannti declared, as residents cheered and applauded his words.

The Ada Songor Lagoon, known for its abundant salt production, has been a crucial source of employment for the community, particularly for local salt miners. The takeover by ElectroChem, which is positioned to produce up to 1 million metric tons of salt annually, has raised serious concerns about the future of the workers who depend on the lagoon for their survival.

Margaret Kuwornu was shot dead by  police in the Songor Lagoon at Bonikope in Ada on Friday 17th May 1985.

“McDan, through ElectroChem, has shown greed and disregard for the welfare of the Ada people. This is a case of a foreign entity exploiting our resources while leaving the locals in misery. The Ada people have been left out of the conversation, and their voices have been drowned out by the interests of the powerful few,” Ghanamannti added.

The CPP, backed under the leadership of Nana Akosua Frimpomaa, is unwavering in its commitment to bringing justice to the Ada Songor community. The lawyer, who has been representing the people of Ada in legal battles against the illegal land grab, promised to continue fighting for their rights, advocating for the return of the land and lagoon to its rightful owners.

“The people of Ada deserve justice, and I will stand with them every step of the way,” he emphasized. “I am determined to restore the pride and prosperity that Ada once enjoyed, and I will fight until we reclaim what was unjustly taken from us.”

Ghanamannti further highlighted the broader implications of such land grabs, pointing to how they reflect a deeper issue of mismanagement and corruption at the highest levels. “This is a symptom of a larger problem that has plagued our country for decades. Under the current regime, resources are being sold off to the highest bidder, leaving the Ghanaian people at the mercy of foreign interests.”

ElectroChem’s illegal land grab threatens livelihoods

In his campaign message, Lawyer Ghanamannti outlined his vision for a self-sufficient, prosperous Ghana—one that prioritizes the needs of its people over foreign exploitation. “Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s dream of a self-sufficient, industrialized Ghana is still within reach, but only if we take control of our resources and rebuild our nation with dignity and pride,” he said.

The CPP promises to fight corruption, restore Ghana’s industrial prowess, and ensure that Ghanaian resources benefit the people first. “If given the mandate, we will restore the lost glory of our nation and empower the people of Ghana to thrive,” Ghanamannti declared.

As the people of Ada continue to face the grim reality of their land being seized by powerful elites, the message from the CPP is clear: the fight for justice is far from over. “We must come together to protect our resources and our future. Vote Nana Frimpomaa, Number 7, for a change that will restore our dignity, our livelihoods, and our pride,” Ghanamannti concluded.

The call for justice and the protection of Ada’s resources is now louder than ever, and the people of Ada are resolute in their determination to reclaim their land from the hands of greed.
